Good Job girls – great interview!!!

Zunächst eine kurze Vorstellung:

Cata: My name is Catalina Montino (24 years old), but everyone calls me Cata. I come from a really nice coastal city in Chile, named Viña del Mar. The first time with my twin sister picked up a hockey stick was at the age of 6 years old, and since then neither of us haven’t stopped having fun playing it.

Estelle: My name is Estelle Hughes and I am from Newcastle, Australia. For the last 4 years I have lived in the US, to play Field Hockey for the College of William and Mary (known as the tribe). And I recently turned 24.

Question: Honestly: when you first heard Bonn, your reaction was WHERE?? You probably hadn’t heard of the small city before, right??

Cata: I heard about Bonn because of a tv show I watched, “Deutschland ’83”, but I had not a clue where it was…

Estelle: I had never heard of Bonn before, but I used to live in Williamsburg, Virginia (the most boring ‘colonial’ town in America) so even though Bonn is small, and random, I knew it couldn’t be as bad as Williamsburg!

Question: Why did you come to Bonn??

Cata: I took the decision of moving to Bonn to play hockey at a good level. A friend of mine, Silke, used to play for the club and give it a really high recommendation.

Estelle: I recently graduated in December and had a lot of free time on my hands – I wanted to keep playing field hockey somehow (and travel) so really I’m just in Bonn for a fun few months to play at a good level while I can and meet some new people.

Question: Your first impression was – holy cow – was it the right decision…??

Cata: My first impression was a wow! We arrived the first day of Carnival, driving a massive LKW truck, when the city of Bonn is full of drunk clowns

Estelle: I spent my first months traveling around Europe, so was definitely glad I came! All play and no work, so a good decision :) My life is very relaxing here

Question: Germans are widely regarded as boring, unfriendly and no humor. Can you confirm??

Cata: To be honest I found people from Bonn really friendly! But you have a really ‘special’ sense of humor. I’ve never explained so many times a joke before in my life.

Estelle: Everyone has been really friendly, but maybe that’s because BTHV is just a nice club to come to! I think sarcasm isn’t always understood because of the language barrier, but I have some crazy funny teammates who aren’t boring at all.

Question: Is there something you found strange…??

Cata: That you rent flats without kitchens, literally never seen this before.

Estelle: Many strange things! I had never squeegeed (siehe Foto) a shower in my life until I came here. Also, people don’t cross roads when the pedestrian light is red, even if no cars are there! Very polite and orderly, not like Australia and the US who are a little more reckless.

And Zaza wears her phone on a rope around her neck and says it’s ‘a hockey thing’… really weird.

Question: What about hockey and the difference to your home countries..??

Cata: You play really tough, with a lot of body contact and you don’t get fouls for doing it. So I started doing the same!!!!!!

Estelle: Hockey is more physical – that’s for sure. About 5 minutes into my first game I realized I needed to toughen up if I wanted to survive.

Question: And you future plans..??

Cata: After the season is finished, I’m going to the UK, but before that I will return to Chile for a holiday to get a refill of mama’s love.

Estelle: Future plans… I never have them. Maybe stay, maybe leave, maybe go to Prague, back to Australia, or maybe the US again! We shall see :)

K.M.

Seit der Rückrunde im Mai freuen sich die 1.
